Waffle Shack is the ultimate grab-and-go beach spot

Right on the sand at Onrus Beach sits a colourful little shack where beach days begin and end. Named the Waffle Shack, it’s the ultimate grab-and-go with sticky loaded hotdogs, poké bowls, sushi, fries, and waffles that you can either take to the beach or to the colourful wooden deck overlooking the water.

ON A BLUE FLAG BEACH

Onrus Beach is a blue flag beach with calm, warm waters. It’s almost always quieter than the popular beaches down the coast in Hermanus, and on any given day, you’ll see bodyboarders at sea and families setting up camp on the sand. 

While designed as a grab-and-go, the Waffle Shack has a shaded deck so you can watch the beach from your seat. The stools are funky candy colours, with bright splashes of décor and a cool dog mural. Pooches are welcome.

WAFFLES SHAPED LIKE CROCS

Given the name, waffles are obviously available here. Apart from the classic waffle, which can be topped up with a selection of sweet treats – like Oreo bits, mini marshmallows, and KitKat crumbs – they also have Crocs-shaped waffles (yes, in the shape of the famous footwear) filled with ice cream. 

For a beach breakfast, the breakfast waffle comes topped with scrambled egg, bacon, tomato, and avo pureé. Gluten-free options are also available.

FRESH POKE BOWLS & SUSHI

For more savouries, there are the freshest poké bowls (with options like salmon, tuna, and a vegan bowl) and sushi. You’ll find classic faves like salmon California rolls, salmon roses, and fashion sandwiches on the sushi platter. All of this can be eaten in the shack or as a takeaway.

JUICE BAR & DELI WITH LOADED HOT DOGS, FRIES 

The Waffle Shack also has deliciously carby options that’ll fuel you for a day in the sun. Each of the hot dogs is named after a breed of pooch, like the German Shepherd with frankfurter and sauerkraut, and our favourite, the Mexican Chihuahua, topped with salsa, jalapenos and crushed nachos.

Plus, the deli has toasted sandwiches, loaded fries packed with nachos or maple bacon, and even a fresh juice bar with options like beetroot and apple or watermelon and pineapple.

POPCORN GIN AND TONIC

For a treat that’s adults-only, the caramel popcorn G&T is surprisingly refreshing, not too sweet, and topped with salted caramel popcorn. The cocktail menu is made for long sunny days: Think boozy strawberry slushies, mango margaritas and tequila sunrises.
