“Zesty, tart, acidic because the grapes were harvested over a particularly hot summer, complex, full-bodied from maturing in new oak, soft tannins, smooth finish despite the high sugar to alcohol contrast” – if the sound of all this wine jargon already has you imagining the wine whirling in your mouth, then this particular wine tasting is for you.
Drive an hour out of the city, watch the silhouette of Table Mountain drift further from view, and relax and unwind in the Cape Winelands. Out among the picturesque pastures, you’ll find the famed La Motte wine estate. La Motte, the family-owned wine estate that was passed down to Hanneli Rupert-Koegelenberg by her father the late billionaire businessman and philanthropist Anton Rupert, produces some of the best wine in the world. To get a taste of that history, La Motte offers an exclusive Vinoteque Tasting that takes collectors, enthusiasts, and plain old drinkers on a trip through time, sampling some of the most prized vintage wines ever produced by the estate.
Guests are hosted in the elegant private tasting room, that leads off from the cellar, and will experience what the estate’s website explains is, “a personalised tasting where the history of wine-making at La Motte will be discussed”. In sampling a selection of eight vintage wines you will come to appreciate La Motte’s international and local success.
“Our Millennium selection used to be our signature wine and that is why it features in the vintage tasting; to give guests a taste of where we came from,” John says. The Millennium is a Bordeaux-inspired blend, consisting of Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and forms one half the Vinoteque Tasting, guests will be served vintages from 2003, 2004, 2008 and 2009. The other half of the tasting gives wine drinkers the chance to sample the Cabernet Sauvignon, made on the estate that same year. “We’ve chosen those years for the vintage tasting because those are the years both the Milllennium and the Cab Sav performed the best,” John says.
Sadly, you can taste and admire the wines featured in the Vinoteque Tasting but you cannot purchase them as they have been reserved for tasting purposes only. But do not be dismayed because the wine estate has an extensive stock excellent grape drink for you to take home in bottles, boxes or trucks.
