The City Is Our Canvas: 9 Days of Live Street Art and Entertainment in Salt River

14 Local and international artists do live and legal street art and guided street art tours at the 2019 International Public Arts Festival

Street art is one part expression, a little bit of rebel and all about inspiring change. And it lives in the city. Which is why NGO Baz Art’s bringing together 14 inspired street artists from around the world (SA, Brazil, the US, Mexico, Spain, Germany) for the third International Public Arts Festival (IPAF) from 9–17 February 2019. And you can be a part of it, for free.

There’s live painting daily and a chance to connect with the featured artists and socialise (IPAF’s all about promoting collaboration). And, if you feel you want to contribute to the movement, or are interested in the city’s rich history of street art, there are guided art tours, too.

THE 2019 THEME AND CREATING A BETTER WORLD
This year’s theme is "Generation Next: Educate, Collaborate, Empower". The 2019 theme represents a renewed focus on the future and the responsibility of present and successive generations to create a better world for all.

GUIDED STREET ART TOUR
Go on a unique cultural experience in Cape Town based on the buzzing and growing acceptance of street art in the Mother City.  You’ll be taken on a two-hour journey of interpretation and deep meaning behind each piece as well as an immersion into the unique cultural history of the Salt River, Woodstock and the Cape Malay communities.

The tour is run by a trained local tour guide, who is knowledgeable about the art displayed as well as about the history of the Salt River area.

WHO IS BAZ-ART?
The non-profit organisation Baz-Art aims to engage, empower and uplift street artists and transform their communities. Baz-Art partners with numerous organisations, including the neighbourhoods they work in, to establish a learning and creative environment for artists.

WHY WAS THE IPAF ESTABLISHED?
The festival was started to give artists a platform to express their creativity in both fine and street art. Event organiser, Alexandre Tilmans says: “This festival showcases the rich history, creativity, skills, diversity and style of South Africa’s public artists; as a result, we act as a platform for painting murals and billboards, providing commissioned work to South African artists at a local and international level. ”
