Plus markets, fun runs and youth-led conversations (June 16)
Get your feet tapping and booty bopping to the country, pop, blues and rock ‘n roll sounds of rockabilly band Peachy Keen at Zula Sound Bar on Saturday, 18 August 2012.
The voices of this five-piece band belong to none other than Dominique Otto and Alex Wise, two platinum blondes who ooze sex appeal reminiscent of the pin-up girls of the 50s era, play the rhythm guitar and keyboards respectively and are joined by fellow tattoed-rockers Ryan McArthur on upright bass, Greg Abrahams on lead guitar and Brandon" Slim Anus" Shore on the drums. In their short 10 months together, this Cape Town-based band have played with seasoned artists, Seether, Civil Twilight, Hog Hoggidy Hog, Taxi Violence and Cassette, and have graced the stages of some of the country’s biggest festivals.
Alongside these country-bumpkins-turned-bad (or –rad), Grassy Spark and Naming James will also play live in concert at Zula Sound Bar, one of the Long Street’s oldest and most highly regarded live music venues.
Grassy Spark
Veteran musicians Josh Riley and Yanick Bathfield founded Grassy Spark earlier this year, and show no signs of slowing down. Drawing inspiration from the unique cultural diversity of the Mother City, this band – born and bred in Cape Town – is becoming increasingly well-known for their eclectic reggae-rock, funk, ska, Latin sound.
Naming James
Johannesburg duo Jamie Acheson, on thin strings, and Ivan Oberholster, on fat strings, produce the folk rock sound that defines Naming James. As part of their ‘StealChainDaisy’ tour in the Cape, a mission mostly devoted to promoting their newly-released album, ‘The Butcher’s Knife’, the musicians are keen to set Long Street alight with their unique sound.
