Last Chance: Find The Perfect Birthday, Anniversary or Mother's Day Gifts and More at KAMERS/Makers

Attention, attention! this is the last day you have to impress that special man, woman or parent with the best present they've never seen

There are markets, and then there’s the KAMERS/Makers market (aka Kamers).

This unique market of local handmade products attracted 50 000 people across five shows around the country last year. For 2019’s Cape Town leg they are taking over an entire school. If you’ve been to this market before, you’ll be excited to know that 30% of the designers are new, sourced from all around the country. If you’ve never been, you’ve been missing out. And here’s why:

THE FRESHEST STUFF YOU'VE EVER SEEN
Men, women, children, parents, grandparents; no one is left out when it comes to the souvenirs, clothing, homeware and other items you'll find at this market. We asked Kamers online marketing manager Charl du Preez to tell us which new makers will have the best items at KAMERS/Makers 2019. He gave us eight options.

Akuko
Makers of homeware and decor, Akuko specialise in aesthetic African design with a focus on the beauty of the material. They do ceramics, lighting, felted fibre, linen and have a new line of small furniture items in store for 2019.
Price Range: R75–R1250

Forecast Raincoats
Forecast Raincoats’ men’s women’s and kid’s raincoats are 100% waterproof and lined with the colourful local Shweshwe material. Plus, this year they are also bringing in a range of kids and ladies rain boots.
Price Range: R350–R1599

Blue Crane Coffee Company
This Stellenbosch-based company get their in-house brand from El Salvador, but roast it themselves, right here in Cape Town. They also do biscotti, macarons and ceramic cups, plus this year they’re doing a special KAMERS/Makers coffee blend.
Price Range: R18–R270

Lena Lisa
Lisa is a wedding dress designer who also has a ready-to-wear clothing line. The range is one-off and includes bomber jackets, pants and jerseys. She’ll also be introducing new patterns and fabric prints to her repertoire.
Price Range: R300–R1500

Calico Ceramics
If you’re looking for decorations for your infant or toddler’s room, this is the place to start searching. Calico create handmade ceramic decor for nurseries and bedrooms including wall mounted animal heads, ceramic mobiles and banners among other things. Some of the new items they’ll be introducing this year include a ceramic rainbow, dinnerware and drawer knobs.
Price Range: R350–R1000

Leonista
Mezcal is like Tequila: Mexican and made with agave. The only difference between the two is that Tequila is made from the blue agave plant, while Mezcal is less picky. Well, that was until Leonista came along and decided to use only Karoo-grown agave in their Mezcal for a totally local take on the Mexican beverage.
Price Range: R50–R60

His Apparel
One of the key goals for KAMERS/Makers, according to du Preez, is to grow their appeal to the male audience. So, His Apparel will provide a good start  with their range of men’s clothing that includes button-up shirts and shorts along with skinny ties, bow ties and braces.
Price Range: R120–R600

Griet & Kie
These guys create handmade, recyclable and refillable bath and body care products including body scrubs, face oils, perfumed oils and foot treatments. They’re a fresh new brand with an all-new line of products for 2019.
Price Range: R60–R300

FUN FACTS ABOUT KAMERS
What Kind Of Name Is That?
Du Preez says the name comes from the set-up of the first event. “Basically, the organisers couldn’t find a venue, so they vacated one of their homes, brought all the goods in and separated them into various rooms … this is why it was called Kamers Vol Geskenke (rooms full of gifts).”
In recent years, they’ve changed the name to KAMERS/Makers to make it more accessible to English speakers.

Curated And Diverse
Part of what makes KAMERS/Makers unique is their stringent application and selection process. This ensures that they curate a market that has a wide range of unique products, sticking to their catchphrase of “the coolest stuff you’ve never seen”. It starts off with an online application process. “Potential makers need to send product descriptions and images, which the team goes through then chooses the best ones,” explains Du Preez. Promising applicants are invited for an interview with the product selection team before they make a final selection of 120+ makers.

What Does It Mean By Diverse?
This artisanal market is about more than wooden statues and beaded jewellery. Some of the categories at KAMERS/Makers include women’s, men’s and kids and baby fashion. They also have toys, interior decor, leather products, accessories and there will be some unique, locally-made beverages including an internationally-renowned drink and a non-alcoholic gin.

Everything Is Absolutely Local
One of the main criteria for selection is that products must be 100% made in South Africa. No imported products. “If some of your raw materials were imported, the product still needs to be designed and finished in South Africa,” says Du Preez.

Ruling The School
Traditionally KAMERS/Makers changes its venue every two years. It’s been held at the Castle Of Good Hope, Cape Town City Hall and, most recently, at St Joseph's Marist in Rondebosch. This year, it’s at Jan Van Riebeek High School in Kloof Street. Du Preez says the reason for the move was because KAMERS/Makers always gets a strong reception when held in the CBD area. They’ll be using classrooms, a function venue, the field and quads, taking over the entire school.

WHAT ELSE IS ON AT KAMERS
Art Exhibition

The Welgemeend function venue on the school premises will be part of the market set-up. This venue has a private South African art collection with works by Irma Stern, Maggie Loubser, Cecil Higgs, Pierneef, Hugo Naude and Tinus de Jongh among others. This gallery will be open to KAMERS/Makers attendees.

Come And Get It!
Shopping is hungry business, so the guys at KAMERS/Makers will have various food and drinks stalls including newcomers Vegan Test Kitchen, Splashh Smoothies & Juices, Paul Lesch Homemade Products, and No Ordinary Burger.
