‘Got Kimchi’, the first Korean food festival of its kind in Cape Town, is set to spice up Youth Day this Saturday, 16 June 2012 from 10am to 4pm. Hosted by Galbi restaurant, the city centre’s only Korean barbeque joint, the event looks to infuse the commemorative South African holiday with some distinct South Korean flavour.
The festival, which unfolds around kimchi, a spicy, traditional cabbage dish known for its countless variations and notable nutritional qualities, will also feature a host of authentic, homemade Korean food, entertainment and libations from the local Korean community.
Festival-goers can look forward to an assortment of market-style stalls selling house specialties, and a series of interesting takes on the much-loved Korean staple:
• Kimchiwors (kimchi-infused sausages)
• Chop Chae (noodles, soy sauce, veggies and sesame oil)
• Kimchi Jigaes (spicy kimchi-based soup)
• Steamed Dumplings
• Yum Yum Chicken (true to its name)
• Duk Boki (rice cylinders in a spicy sauce)
What’s more, drumming and dance performances, kimchi-making demonstrations and competitions, traditional clothing exhibitions and insightful presentations about Korea and its culinary mainstay are all on the cards for FREE!
And for those less interested in expanding their horizons and more interested in closing in on a comfortable afternoon buzz, Darling Slow beer will be on tap, and Soju (Korean rice liquor), cocktails and kimchi bloody marys will be available from the bar.
Entrance is free, food prices are variable but reasonable, so come hungry!
