Our beaches are one of the main reasons that so many people flock to the Mother City every year. We are lucky to be home to some Blue Flag beaches too (an international recognition awarded to beaches that show excellence in cleanliness, amenities, environmental standards and safety). But we need to work at ensuring that our beaches remain as clean as possible, which is why on the first Saturday of each month a group of passionate Cape Town residents get together to clean up the beach. Every month the beach clean up tackles a different Cape Town beach. On Saturday, 5 August 2017 the Beach Clean Up party heads to Mariner’s Wharf in Hout Bay to do its thing there.
Since this event is all about the environment the organisers kindly request that all volunteers bring a pair of reusable gloves instead of using disposable ones, which further exacerbate the problem.
The issue with beach pollution is that between 2% and 5% of all plastic ends up in the ocean eventually, according to National Geographic. Bear in mind though that it still amounts to 4.8 to 12.7 million tonnes of plastic waste!
The good news is that Capetonians are already more environmentally conscious than just ten years ago and there are numerous efforts underway to protect our environment. Of course we must continue to strive to make environmentally sensible choices at all times.
TICKETS FOR THE 2017 BEACH CLEAN UP CAPE TOWN AT MARINER’S WHARF
This event is absolutely free. Bags and gloves will be provided, but please try to bring a pair of reusable gloves so you don’t further contribute to the plastic pollution problem in Cape Town that this event is trying to solve! . Once you’re done with the clean up (which kicks off at 10am), why not stay in the Hout Bay area for a spot of coffee or tea? We have an area guide and we think it’s pretty cool, so check it out.
If you have any questions or queries, please feel free to contact the organisers directly by giving them a call on +27 (0)72 296 9132 or you can email info@sealsnorkeling.com. Happy cleaning everyone!
