BBQ Ribs Special at The Backyard Grill Lounge
Savour succulent, sticky ribs for just R150 per kilogram on Wed, Sat and Sun
Anyone who’s vaguely fond of meat is almost certainly a ribs fanatic. So, the fact that these sticky, sweet bands of goodness are going for a scant R150 per kilogram every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday evening from 5pm onwards at The Backyard Grill Lounge in Sea Point should be enough to put a sizeable slice of the Cape Town population right up there on cloud nine.
The laidback Atlantic Seaboard braai mecca, which sits between grocery shops, R5 stores and old boutiques on Regent Road, is now rather famous for its BBQ beef ribs, which usually go for R220 per kilogram. They’re tender, they’re of the highest quality and they come doused in the restaurant’s to-die-for secret basting sauce – which, incidentally, is now available for purchase. Plus, they’re delicious when served with one of The Backyard’s tasty sides – think braaied mushrooms, golden fries, mixed vegetables, pan-roasted baby potatoes, mielies or roast aubergine and feta.
Visitors can select their chunk of meat from the front counter themselves and then weigh out the exact portion they want (it’s not essential to get a whole kilogram). The food is then braaied to perfection outside on the grill, giving it that smoky, Mzansi flavour that anyone born and bred locally simply can’t resist.
Aside from the ribs and sides, there’s also a selection of starters, like BBQ wings, grilled calamari, and homemade butternut gnocchi. There are also several other pay-by-weight meat options too, such as rib-eye steak, boerewors and Karoo lamb chops. Plus, booze is reasonably priced – guests can match their meal with a glass of crisp wine from as little as R28 (bottles usually ring in between R100 and R200 each). There’s also the new craft beer bar to excite hipsters and okes alike – because everyone enjoys a chilled brew with their braai.
And the ambience at this easy-going haunt lends itself to a positive experience too. The restaurant blends chilled-out vibes with stylish, beach-inspired décor and boasts both a clean, contemporary interior and a spacious backyard area where diners can lounge on cushioned benches and lean up against seaside holiday-esque bamboo barricades. Recently acquired by Mr SA second runner-up, JP Robberts, the restaurant’s had a mini facelift, with improvements like fans, shade cloth, and 55-inch TVs enhancing the ambience. Now you can rev up for game days with the ribs special – revel in live broadcasting of the match with the volume cranked high.
Essentially, it’s a carnivore’s paradise on any night, but if you’re anything like the mainstream meat-eater, it’s even more of a must-do on Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday. Because many are likely to think the same, just be sure to book a table before you arrive to secure your spot; to do so, call +27 (0)21 433 1296 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
