Cape Town specials to swoon even the staunchest penny-pincher

Cape Town city centre’s Rick’s Café Américain may have a rooftop bar, but with its three fireplaces, its honeycomb of cosy corners and its rich, warm interior there’s little convincing to be done: this is one of only a handful of Cape Town restaurants truly equipped for winter.

If toasty décor and Hollywood nostalgia – Rick’s is, of course, a nod to the iconic café in the classic film Casablanca – aren’t alluring enough in their own right, then perhaps the restaurant’s killer winter specials, valid from May until the end of August, are preferable draw points.

From R45 lunch specials (seriously!) to a 0.2-litre carafe of warming Glühwein for a mere R22 (on offer every day from 5pm to 7pm), whether you’re looking for a bite to eat or something stiffer to take the edge off, the Moroccan-styled café has a deal that’s hard to resist.

Additionally, cocktails go for R27, Jose Cuervo Tequila goes for R15 per shot, selected SAB beers are R15 and tapas and meze platters for two paired with a half-litre of house wine are an incredible R110.

And if you feel like staying on for supper, the menu features some hearty tagines and lamb dishes perfect for warming from the inside out. Not to mention, there’s a choice of 36 different beers for those banking on a liquid dinner.
