The Sunflower Fund Gala Dinner in Cape Town

Grab your fringe dress, Mary Janes and Leo Di Caprio look-alike: The Sunflower Fund is hosting a Gatsby-themed charity gala evening at the historic Cape Town City Hall on Wednesday, 29 July 2015 to raise funds for the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR).

Formed in 1999 by parents whose children were diagnosed with leukaemia, the Sunflower Fund aims to build and sustain the SABMR by recruiting donors, educating the public and fundraising.  As the SABMR receives no national funding, the Sunflower Fund is crucial to increasing the chances that those diagnosed with leukaemia will have access to life-saving transplants.

The Great Gatsby-inspired affair includes a cocktail reception during which guests will be greeted with bubbles, followed by a culinary feast prepared by famed chef Annalize Buchanan. Aside from gourmet delights, attendees can also anticipate a silent auction with some wonderful goodies and experiences up for grabs, along with the opportunity to network with some of the city’s finest philanthropists.

The Edwardian setting of the City Hall forms an ideal backdrop for the elegant dinner, with its rich history (it’s 110 years-old), old-fashioned finesse and nostalgic grandeur. Add to this lovely ladies dressed to the nines in feathers and fringe and jaunty gents in dinner suits and you have the makings of a party to rival one of Jay’s own.

HOW TO BECOME A DONOR

With the chance of finding a matching donor being just 1 in 100 000, every person who signs up could have the potential to beat the odds and save someone’s life. Signing up is a simple process, which starts with prospective donors calling the Sunflower Fund’s toll free number 0800 12 1082 to check they meet the criteria and process their Sunflower/ SABMR registration form and reference number. Following that:

• Potential donors need to go to their nearest donor recruitment clinic to hand in the completed form and have a small blood sample taken.
• The blood sample will then be analysed according to tissue type and put on the national database. This tissue typing test is very expensive so donors are asked to consider donating towards its cost. Donors can choose to pay R350; R750; R1400 or R2000 towards the test, but this can be sponsored if they can’t afford to do so.
• Donors will receive a donor card from the SABMR. A donor will only be asked to sponsor stem cells if they are a perfect match for a patient.
• This donation procedure is minor and can be read about on the Sunflowerfund.co.za site.
