So, it’s only Wednesday and you’re wondering how in the world you’re ever going to make it over the hump and into the sweet refuge of weekend? A serene breakfast or lunch refuel at Café Puka, which serves up a midweek tortilla wrap special exclusively for CapeTownMagazine.com readers (just name-drop us to the owner, Michael Edwards), might just be the kind of oil your engine needs.
Tucked away on a quiet corner in Tamboerskloof beyond the hustle and bustle of Cape Town’s main streets, Café Puka offers tasty, wholesome food bound to leave you feeling both satisfied and recharged. Every Wednesday, diners can fill up with one of three of the eatery’s signature wraps – a fruit salad wrap, a breakfast wrap called the Train Smash or a huevos rancheros (Mexican-style ranch eggs), avocado and chorizo wrap – for just R44.
Trained chef and food-lover Michael has a tried-and-tested (and now not so secret) recipe to make these pseudo-sandwiches absolutely delicious: he lightly fries each tortilla after it’s been generously stuffed with simple, flavourful ingredients and folds it over to create a crispy, samoosa-like outside. Not to mention, the tortillas are 30cm in diameter, which makes for serious-sized wraps. So, you can fill the belly without making too much of a dent in the wallet.
Plus, with a view of Table Mountain, a cute children’s playground across the road for the little ones and a laidback, lazy-days atmosphere, Café Puka is just the spot to pretend that it’s weekend and truly treat yourself…even though it’s only Wednesday.
Wraps on special at Café Puka
Café Puka is open every day from 8am to 6pm, and the Wednesday wrap special is valid all day.
