On Tuesday, 28 February 2017 local resident and established historian Michael Walker will take you on a journey back to 1980, where you will marvel and explore some of Cape Town’s oldest hotels. He lacks the genuine power to take you back in time, but he will build a holistic picture of 19th century Cape Town, and all the hotels that operated.
Shockingly, out of the 60 hotels that fall into the time period between 1890 and 1911 only four remain standing today. Michael Walker is an expert in this field, and he will be speaking about 24 hotels in total, all interesting or special in their own way.
Mr Walker is a very well-known local historian, he has published many books about Cape Town, and his recently published work The Old Hotels of Cape Town (1890 - 1911) will be on sale on the night for R200. This amazing work will take you into a part of history you may never have considered before, and how the legacy of these buildings should spark us to maintain historic structures. He has researched and published either papers or books about shipwrecks off the coast of Cape Town, railway journeys, coastal events and even some area specific histories of Kalk Bay, Simon’s Town, St James and Muizenberg.
This lecture is being hosted at the auditorium of the South African Jewish Museum. The Iziko SA Museum is currently under construction, and the very kind people at the SA Jewish Museum have agreed to host the monthly lectures in the meantime.
