Spekko Celebrity Cook-off at the Market at The Palms

Catch local foodie industry insiders whipping up a bit of magic at this free monthly Saturday highlight in Woodstock

One hundred rands worth of ingredients. One bottle of wine. One bag of Spekko rice. One induction plate. Two hours. That’s it. Then it’s up to the who’s who of the Cape Town foodie world to come up with a little bit of gastronomic magic.

Okay, it may not quite be a Masterchef competition, but the Market at The Palms Spekko Rice Celebrity Cook-offs have all of the excitement (and none of the nasty competitiveness) of the cult television series. Instead, like the market that hosts the contests, the free and fun cooking events are light-hearted and relaxed, and market-goers can get up-close and personal to all the action one Saturday a month between 10am and 12pm.

The next culinary affair sizzles to a start on Saturday, 12 September 2015, where the well-known author Niël Stemmet will be launching and signing his third cookbook ‘bitter+sweet’. The contestants will be cooking recipes from his book, but will add Spekko rice to their dishes.

As for the participants, they change every time but always include some of the connoisseurs of the foodie world, like the Expresso Morning Show’s Zola Nene, Landbou Kos food editor Arina du Plessis and Real Men Can Cook blogger Fritz Brand.

And while the local celebs are slicing onions, simmering jus and reducing stocks, visitors can engage them in a friendly chat or steal a few selfies (and tips and tricks). After all, creating a “genuine, down-to-earth” environment is one of the country-style market’s cornerstones, so along with old-fashioned food done with a twist, it’s only right to expect some old-fashioned kuiering.

At 12pm the judging panel – which also changes regularly and includes some of the city’s notables – weighs up what the celebs have whipped up and declares a grand winner, at which point there are usually more than enough tasters to go around.

Of course, it goes without saying that taster or no-taster, no one will go hungry at the Market at The Palms. The weekly foodie bazaar’s made a name for itself by whisking visitors back to the kitchens of their childhoods, where grandma was elbow deep in a cooking bowl, the smell of hartkos (heart food) simmering on an open stove.

That means that the 40-odd traders that call the market home man tables that groan under the weight of spruced up South African heritage food, like coq au vin pies, home baked sourdough bread and angelfish pâté, as well as delectable gourmet goodies, like oysters on the half shell, organic tabouleh and exotic mushroom skewers. Don’t forget to check out the bustling bric-a-brac market filled with treasures for any eager vintage goods enthusiast.

The Market at The Palms folk teamed up with Woodstock Hookers in a charity project that encourages people to crochet blankets for auction. The money raised will be used to buy blankets and other items for The Haven Night Shelter and Moira Henderson House in Woodstock. At this upcoming market, the group of women will all help make a giant blanket for the auction.

For an extra dollop of ambience, from 12pm to 2pm there’s live music performances with the likes of Dave Ferguson, and because the market’s indoors with a great outdoor area, the weather isn’t a factor.

The cherry on top? Parking is free!
