Romeo and Juliet Ballet at Maynardville Open Air Theatre

In fair Maynardville…

THIS IS AN OLD FEATURE

Here's everything you need to know about Maynardville Open-Air Festival, from programme and picnics to parking and tickets.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Romeo and Juliet, aside from being a rollercoaster of emotion, is one of the Bard’s most famous plays. Every Sunday from Sunday, 22 January 2017 to Sunday, 26 February 2017, the very talented dancers at the Cape Town City Ballet will take to the stage at Maynardville Open-Air Theatre, in a proudly South African reproduction of Shakespeare’s beloved classic.

Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal lions of these two foes
A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life;
Whole misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents’ strife.

The tale of Romeo and Juliet chronicles the love these two individuals have in spite of a passionate hatred between their two families. Romeo, a Montague, meeting Juliet, a Capulet, by chance at the Capulet Ball (which Romeo and his closest confidant Mercutio attend without invitation). They fall in love, and it is a love that carries them through various hurdles and tragedies, not even the death of Juliet’s cousin (at the hands of Romeo) can separate them. After all of these violent acts and Romeo’s exile for the murder of Juliet’s cousin, Juliet is told she must marry a man her father has selected. This is where the story complicates; she takes a sleeping potion, and is believed to be dead so buried in the Capulet crypt. Romeo hears this, and goes to the crypt with poison, claiming not wanting to live in a world without Juliet. He takes the potion, only for Juliet to awaken shortly after, who then stabs herself in the heart to avoid a life without Romeo.

The play ends with the famous line – “for never was a story of more woe, than this of Juliet and her Romeo”.

The Cape Town City Ballet will bring this classic story to life with their spectacular skills. They’ll twirl, whirl, plié, jump and couru across the stage for your delight and entertainment. The choreography for this production was down to Robin van Wyk, and the cast are all members of the Cape Town City Ballet – you won’t find better ballerinas anywhere else in the Mother City!

Maynardville Open-Air Theatre is the perfect venue for this sensational show, and it forms part of the annual Shakespeare in the Park season which runs (with Twelfth Night) from Tuesday, 17 January to Saturday, 25 February 2017.
