Open Mic Night at Massimo’s

Sink your teeth into some authentically Italian cuisine with a side of music!

Sometimes you get a craving for Italian food, and when you do, it hits hard. All you can think about is flavourful pizza and heavenly pasta, and you’re left wondering “where can I go to satisfy this craving?”. Well, we have the answer; Massimo’s in Hout Bay. This home-away-from-home style restaurant is a family-run institution that puts flavour and quality of ingredients before anything else! Every Wednesday, they have a very special event that all are invited to enjoy, along with their delectable dinners.

Massimo’s combines welcoming decor with friendly service and delectable food. This one of a kind experience will see you return time and time again for the best Italian food you have ever tasted. Dedicated to delivering only truthful information; I went to Massimo’s to investigate how good their food really is. I am happy to report that it is everything I hoped it would be. Their starters are fresh and flavourful, their pasta is home-made and beautifully cooked, while their pizza is cheesy and unique and their desserts are to die for!

Every Wednesday, Massimo’s avails their stage to anyone that feels like showing the world their voice. The evening usually starts with Anton the manager strumming his guitar and stretching those musical muscles much to the delight of the audience. The waitresses also sing, in case you were wondering. When a true anthem comes on, the pizza oven operators grab their tambourines and join the fun. It’s a sight to see when the whole restaurant is joined together in song; what an experience! As a guest, you are more than welcome to sing (no in fact, you are encouraged to do so).

Massimo’s menu features hot and cold starters (I cannot recommend the Pepite enough. It’s fried polenta bites covered in parmesan cheese)). I also tried the A Fagiolo which is borlotti beans with mushrooms and garlic, marinated in olive oil and served with freshly baked bread. Massimo then brought out the Seared Beef Carpaccio, and my night was made. It was tender, soft, perfectly salted and as near to perfect as it could be! Next came the pasta (mine was served with squid and chorizo) and it tasted like I was dining by the seaside in Naples. The pasta was so good that I didn’t think anything could taste anywhere near as amazing, and then a pizza arrived and I knew I was mistaken- greatly. The pizza was, light, fresh and packed more flavour than any other pizza I have ever had.

I haven’t even gotten to one of the best parts of Massimo’s! They have a charity initiative that sees the restaurant donate money to certain charities when you buy certain dishes. They support loads of charities with their initiative including DARG, Hout Bay Volunteer Emergency Services, Hout Bay United Football Club, NSRI, Hout Bay Cares and more!
