Malay Mondays at The Charles Café
Tuck into the Cape Malay culture at these weekly themed dinners, every Monday
The honest and down-to-earth eatery in the heart of Cape Town’s quaint De Waterkant suburb, The Charles Café, will be serving up some tasty dishes that pay homage to Cape Malay cuisine. Introducing Malay Mondays, these weekly themed dinners offer patrons the chance to sample this unique food culture – from meaty curries and bobotie to sosaties and koeksisters – every Monday night from 6pm to 9:30pm.
Owner of The Charles Café, Justine Burger, reveals that the idea of Malay Monday nights came from a local guest who was having breakfast there. The conversation with the patron sparked a quest to explore the heritage of the area, and the unique style of food that has developed over the centuries.
“I became interested in the concept to explore a food culture I wasn't familiar with, and to share that with others,” says Justine. And so, on the first Monday of April, Malay Mondays was officially launched. Unsurprisingly, all the dishes sold out on the first night – a good sign of things to come. “The tasting option on the menu proved quite favourable,” enthused Justine, “This option is for those who would like to try a little bit of everything - a Cape Malay tapas,” she added.
Unlike traditional curries, the Cape Malay style is slightly sweeter and not as hot, but still boasts beautifully aromatic and complex flavours. The cuisine draws influences from Asia (specifically Malaysia) as well as Africa and Europe, incorporating various cooking methods to produce a succulent serenade on the taste buds.
The options on the menu are well-priced – think mild chicken biryani, juicy lamb curry, fragrant vegetarian korma and sweet and spicy mince bobotie – for an affordable dinner after work. Follow the main course with something sweet, such as traditional boeber, sticky koeksisters or milk tart. For an exciting taste discovery, try the tasting menu as it includes all five mains and two desserts for R190p/p.
