LlamaLand: A Playground for Misfits and Madness

Experience magic in real life at this two-day festival of fun and creativity

We’ve heard of a place where you can experience reality in its most unreal form. A space of music, poetry, art, sustainability, and splendour. A safe and welcoming haven where you can frolic freely all night and day with friends and family. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Llamaland, the festival with a bit of everything. Find it at the Hangklip Hotel in Pringle Bay and live a little differently for two days, from Friday, 20 to Sunday, 22 October 2017.

It all started in 2016 as an ‘out-there’ birthday party turned mini-fest of sorts, in Hangklip. It had its initiator thinking this could turn into something bigger – an official festival. Soon, the concept of Llamaland had formed. Why “Llamaland”? There are no llamas involved in the event any further than its name (no llamas were harmed in the making of this festival!). According to its founder, the name just sounded right and llamas are a little bit magical, just like the festival.

Llamaland has a purpose beyond being a super cool party weekend. It’s also an event for a good cause as proceeds from ticket sales and various other festival activities will be donated to Eyethu, a fundraising initiative to build a community skate park in Hout Bay.

Given this is its official starting year, the organisers are expecting between 200 and 400 folks to show, meaning overcrowding is unlikely to be a problem.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2017 LLAMALAND FESTIVAL IN PRINGLE BAY

A space where everyone can create and play: Loads of professional creatives and entertainers will be in attendance. However, at Llamaland, the creativity isn’t reserved for the performers and artists. Both kids and grown-ups are invited to co-create the space too, and you can be as playful as you like. Take along whatever you want to add to the decorations or general fun, as long as it’s nothing too loud! Blow bubbles. Bring something pretty to hang in the trees. Bring your hacky sack. Heck, bring stick-on body tattoos to hand out to your fellow party animals.

Various stations will be providing supplies and activities to further stoke your creativity. This includes a Pottery, body painting, and Creation Station where you can doodle, paint, craft and creative to your heart’s content. New clothing kids on the block, Kattekwaad Apparel, will also be showing off some of their cute designs in a tent with an interactive t-shirt printing station.

When it’s time to play, take on your friends at hopscotch and Twister, try out the slackline, and visit the fantastical-sounding dream tree.

Pop UP Theatre: This mini tented theatre pops up at festivals around the country. Be sure to catch their unusual theatrics at Llamaland. From storytelling with shadow puppets to UV Light shows, it’s guaranteed to add even more sparkle to the weekend.

All things meditative and mindful: A yoga tent is in the works for the weekend, with yogi Jen ready to get your mind, body and spirit in the (right) flow. The organisers are looking to add laughing yoga sessions to the lineup so let’s hold thumbs for that – we can’t imagine a better way to feel good all over.

A diverse, proudly South African fusion of performers, musos and food vendors bringing you magic: Wowee, is there a lot in store for Llamalanders! There’s already a massively exciting music lineup of super fresh music makers who’ll be taking to the stage. These include Daddy Warbucks, Diamond Thug, Lo-Ghost and Warongx. These talented acts are fast becoming big names on the SA music scene, if they’re not already. Genres you’ll hear range from classic-style rock ‘n’ roll to dream pop, chilled acoustic, indie with a Soweto sound, and much more.

Llamaland has announced one food vendor, the Jaffles food trailer, which will be serving up warm, crispy, delicious, round jaffles, which is a cool word for a toasted sandwich. This food truck takes an old favourite to the next level – think Nutella and three-cheese rainbow ones!

Other than the Pop UP Theatre folks, one other performance artist has been announced: Fires a’Light, also known as Mbalenhle. She performs dance and flow with fire and LED lights, and it’s a beautiful sight.

Keep watching the festival’s Facebook page for alerts and updates on artists, performers and food trucks who’ll be in attendance.

SUSTAINABILITY AT THE 2017 LLAMALAND FESTIVAL IN PRINGLE BAY

Llamaland wants to spread the eco-friendly message to all attendees. To help the festival leave a smaller carbon footprint behind, festival-goers are asked to bring their own cutlery and crockery, where they can, in order to reduce the amount of plastic cutlery and paper plates used. Those who do bring their own will be rewarded with some food and activity discounts! There will also be reminders to use water sparingly, and  designated clean-up times that will be announced at various intervals.

TICKETS TO THE 2017 LLAMALAND FESTIVAL IN PRINGLE BAY

R450/p is the price of a Llamaland Weekend Pass for adults and older teens. Children between the ages of 7 and 13 pay R100/p for the weekend, while kids under 7 can be Llamaland-goers for free.

You can find and book your tickets online at Quicket.co.za. There is also an option available on Quicket to give a donation towards a ticket for someone else who can’t afford to attend the festival.

The ticket prices include camping, but if you’re not up for sleeping in a tent, you can also find plenty of accommodation in the area. Hangklip Hotel offers accommodation for R200/p, but sources tell us that it is already fully booked. However, it is still worth giving the hotel a call to make sure.

The magic begins at 5pm on the Friday and things will wind down at midday (12pm) on the Sunday.

N.B. Please remember to bring your own cutlery and crockery for food truck discounts!
