Iconic Senegalese musician Ismaël Lô will be performing live at the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts on Sunday, 19 November 2017. If you didn’t know already, the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden hosts sunset concerts that set the tone for summer.
Ismaël Lô, is a multi-instrumentalist and actor, with chart-topping hits and critically acclaimed international albums. Starting his solo career in 1984, he has gone to produce over seven studio albums around the world, scooping plenty of awards along the way. The success of his single “Tajabone” in the European charts launched his career abroad in both the music and film industry. “Tajabone” was featured in Pedro Almodovar’s film All about my mother, and “Jumma Africa” is the intro song in Shake Hands with the Devil - a movie about the Rwandan genocide.
His music is not the only thing featured in films, he dabbles in acting too. Starring in movies like “Africa, my Africa”, and “Tableau Ferraile” to name a few. The award-winning musician also creates awareness on HIV and other epidemics affecting Africa, through some of the movies he stars in.
Coming back to the continent after 10 years, his show is highly anticipated by his adoring fans, and what better venue than the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens? His recent album Sénégal was recorded in Paris, London and Dakar. Lo says, “Giving this album the title Sénégal was my way of paying tribute to my own country, in recognition of all its gifts to me”.
The botanical gardens are the ideal spot for concerts, and the open spaces make it the perfect place for a picnic. Concert-goers are allowed to bring camp chairs, blankets and picnic baskets filled with treats; including alcohol, to enjoy a summer sunset while soaking in live performances by talented musicians.
