Catch Mzansi’s top track cyclists compete for championship honours and bragging rights at the Bellville Velodrome from Friday, 22 to Sunday, 24 August 2014 in three high-level competitions: the SA Omnium Championships, The Linea President’s Cup (interprovincial) and the Western Cape Grand Prix.
Sporting enthusiasts will have the chance to cheer on some of Mzansi’s superstars, including all the riders who represented South Africa at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, as well as handful of up-and-coming athletes vying for a spot on the national squad.
Competitors in the Omnium will have to wheel their way through a series of events that take place between Friday, 22 August (from 9am to 6pm) and Saturday, 23 August (from 9am to 3pm). Spectators can look out for big names like silver medallist of the 2013 World Championships Nolan Hoffman as well as acclaimed national riders like Kellan Gouveris, Theuns van der Bank, Morne van Niekerk, Evan Carstens and Oupa Maluleke.
Sunday sees the interprovincial meeting between 9am and 12pm as well as the Western Cape Grand Prix, which follows thereafter and runs until 6pm. Attendees can expect to see top teams from around the country competing, including Abantu (KwaZulu-Natal), Bonitas (Gauteng) and Giant (Boland).
What’s more, onlookers can look forward to four nail-biting track sprinting events at this year’s contest: the team sprint, team pursuit, the 1500m and the ‘devil takes the hindmost’ (in the latter the last rider to cross the line falls out while the remaining two riders must sprint for the coveted title).
Competitors include the cream of the crop in local track sprinting: SA junior champion Eugene Soule (who is set to compete in the upcoming World Youth Track Cycling Championships), eight-time gold winner at the SA Track Championship Maroesjka Matthee and Jean Smith, Kyle Borches and Matthew de Freitas.
Riders will then top off the three-day event with the Grand Prix contest, a meeting where competitors will vie for individual glory in the match sprint, keirin, points and scratch races.
This will be the first of three interprovincial meeting to take place in order to determine the winner of the coveted President’s Cup.
