Clamber through the vineyards and rugged rises of Delvera Farm as the sun sets and a round moon comes up to light your way. On the evenings of Friday, 3 and Saturday, 4 November 2017, head there for the Delvera Full Moon Hike, presented by footwear specialists FALKE and outdoor adventure experts Dirtopia. The event will have keen walkers and nature lovers taking on the 9.75km Dirtopia Vineyard Trail. The circular path goes through the Stellenbosch farm, a Renosterveld Conservancy, and a Yellowwood forest, meandering up to the top of a koppie called Klapmutskop.
WHY YOU SHOULD GO ON A FULL MOON HIKE AT DELVERA FARM
Stunning views in a natural setting: The sun setting over Table Mountain is a sight that never gets old. Get an eyeful of this as well as a 360-degree view of the winelands as you take the path, making for one beautiful hike. Come nightfall, the landscape becomes a stunning silhouette and you’ll instead be able to gaze at the glorious moonrise over the Du Toitskloof mountains. With peaceful nature and fresh air surrounding you, and the round moon above, it’s going to be a magical adventure.
You can opt to have a sunset picnic: Enjoy an alfresco meal at the top of the koppie. This can be provided by the organisers at an additional cost of R80/p, if you book beforehand. Included in the picnic pack is a tasty sandwich or wrap (with both veggie and meat options) ice tea, fruit and snacks. If you choose to, you can bring your own snacks and drinks instead. Either way, be sure to pack your picnic blanket (for lying on to gaze at the stars, of course!).
It’s a family friendly event: Children are welcome to come along too. If you or your child don’t think you can quite manage a 9.75km hike, don’t worry. There’s also the option of doing an easier 5km trail and a shuttle service is available to take tired legs and/or children back to the base at Dirtopia Trail Centre. This hike will take you along a single track starting at the Pepper Tree and it will take about 30 minutes to get to the top of Klapmutskop. All trekkers will be back at the Trail Centre at around 8pm, depending on walking speed.
And, to state the obvious, hiking is exercise, and exercise is good for you: There’s nothing like getting a good stretch and that heart rate up to make you feel great (or at least you will when it’s over).
For those who feel peckish by the time you get back down to the Trail Centre, the fully licensed Dirtopia Cafe located there will be open until 9:30pm.
What to bring:
Getting to the top can take up to 90 minutes, so ensure you don’t miss out and please don’t be at the Dirtopia Trail Centre later than 6pm.
If you want to stay over rather than travel back to town, consider booking a room at the Trail Lodge. The Dirtopia Trail Centre is open every day of the week and is a great place to find adventure, with marked hiking and mountain biking trails. You can hire mountain bikes and even nordic walking sticks.
TICKETS TO THE 2017 FULL MOON HIKE AT DELVERA WINE ESTATE/DIRTOPIA TRAIL CENTRE
Arrive at the Trail Centre from 5pm on both evenings to get yourself psyched up for the 6pm start. Hikers will get back to the Centre at approximately 8pm, depending on walking speed. The cost for joining the hike is R100/p and R50/p for kids under the age of 10. Please book and pay for your tickets online at Dirtpass.co.za.
