Guided Farm Walks on Avontuur Wine Estate in Stellenbosch
Take a stroll through this destination winery and learn more about its award-winning vino, champion race horses and rich family history
Best known for their award-winning, premier range of wine and elegant race horses, the Avontuur Wine Estate in Stellenbosch is offering guests the unique opportunity to experience the estate and all its wonders on a Guided Farm Walk. The expedition takes visitors around some of the estate most breathtaking locations, offering splendid scenery and allowing guests to encounter and appreciate the grounds on a more personal level.
Guided walks start with a welcome drink at Avontuur’s tasting room from where the group will be escorted through the winery’s vineyards, paddocks (there are about 100 horses on the farm), as well as historical sites such as the manor house and the Taberer family memorial bench.
These tours do not only give visitors the chance to learn more about the farm’s celebrated wines, but also allows them to sip, swirl and pair accordingly. The tour ends with a seasonal speciality tasting – think wine pairings with biltong, nougat, sweet treats and the ever-popular chocolate cup with a shot of Avontuur’s liqueur wine, Above Royalty.
The duration of the walk is 30 to 45 minutes, with an extra 30 minutes for the tasting. The total cost of the tour is R120p/p, which includes the walk, the tasting and an illustrated map of the farm to take home. It is advisable for walkers to be moderately fit and to wear comfortable shoes. Also be sure to take a hat and sunblock on the walk for protection against the harsh African sun.
The farm walks take place every weekday, where a minimum of six paying persons and maximum of 20 can be accommodated (pre-booking 48 hours in advance is essential). Smaller groups, or for those who wish to not take part in a guided tour, are welcome to opt for a self-guided option at R70p/p. The self-guided option is available daily (including weekends) from 9am to 4pm and includes a speciality tasting and an illustrated map to keep.

Tip: After your farm tour and wine pairing, why not head to the estate’s restaurant for a meal making use of seasonal and locally sourced produce? The eatery is open Mondays to Fridays from 9am to 5pm and on Saturday and Sundays from 9am to 4pm for breakfast and lunch. From 1 October 2016 it is also open from Wednesday to Saturday for dinner.
NOTE: The guided farm walk is not suitable for wheelchair users. Kids are welcome, but remain the responsibility of their parents.
