5 Special Ways to Celebrate Earth Hour 2018

Join in the global 2018 Earth Hour challenge on Saturday, 24 March 2018 to raise awareness about climate change – here are five great activities to partake in this year

As the moon rises on Saturday, 24 March 2018, homes across the world will dim their lights for an hour in support of the global Earth Hour initiative. Capetonians are urged to join the masses and to take a stand against climate change by switching off all non-essential lights between 8:30pm and 9:30pm.

WHAT IS EARTH HOUR ALL ABOUT?

Earth Hour is a global grassroots movement started by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) that encourages individuals, businesses and governments around the world to take positive action by turning off their lights for a designated 60-minute period.

So, hop on the "green" bandwagon and do your bit to help overcome critical environmental challenges.

FIVE FUN THINGS TO DO DURING EARTH HOUR 2018

DINING IN THE DARK WITH THE RADISSON RED HOTEL
The OUIBar + KTCHN at the Radisson Red is hosting a spectacular Earth Hour dinner from 7:30pm to 11pm that will be prepared using very little electricity. Enjoy a uniquely crafted five-course meal for R495/p, or paired with wine for R695, which includes mouthwatering delights such as oysters and bubbly, a tataki and mushroom dish, slow-cooked lamb and baked Alaska. Of course, you'll be dining in the dark, which definitely just adds to the romance and appeal of this fabulous event.

NOCTURNAL FUN AT KIRSTENBOSCH
Join the night-time adventure at Kirstenbosch where participants will be challenged to navigate their way through the dark garden to find hidden checkpoints. The family-friendly event presented by the WWF and is followed by entertainment by The Voice SA finalist Robin Pieters.

POTLUCK PICNIC BY NIGHT
Have a potluck picnic with friends by candlelight. This is a great opportunity to invite a few friends and share something special together during this hour of observance. Seeing as that Easter is around the corner, check out this pickled fish recipe as inspiration for your picnic basket. Don't forget the wine.

GATHER THE FAMILY AROUND A BONFIRE
Make Earth Hour a family hour: gather the kids around a fire and tell stories while roasting marshmallows. This is a great opportunity to teach the little ones about why we celebrate Earth Hour, how important electricity is to our everyday lives and finding that balance between what we humans need to move forward while still maintaining harmony with the natural world around us.

CELEBRATE EARTH HOUR WITH YOUR TASTEBUDS
You can't very well cook in the dark so use this as an excuse to head down to one of the many great Cape Town restaurants for a bite to eat. For example, at Faber Restaurant in Paarl, Head Chef Eric Bulpitt and his team will be turning off the electricity to create mouth-watering dishes through pickling, curing and braaing.
