When the future meets the present, when sports meets technology and when absolute fun brings out your competitive beast within, what that gives you is Drone racing. You must be wondering how, when ard where exactly you can do it? Not to worry, a one day course will be taking place on Saturday, 24 June 2017, at Drone Racing Africa (Constantia), and will definitely be an experience you can not imagine.
For those of you who don’t know what a drone is, it an unmanned aerial vehicle, which means it is an aircraft without a human pilot aboard. It is controlled by a ground based pilot as there are communication systems put in place between the two. Now you must want to know how drone racing works right? Well until this point, we could only experience a bird’s-eye view and high speed racing via movies and videogames, but with First Person View (FPV) quadcopters and other unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), anyone can manoeuvre a drone and is able to experience the adventure of FPV racing.
What to expect:
The one-day course will start off by introducing the relevant theory behind drone flying and key points including:
Equipment Overview
Air Safety/Regulations
Theory of Flight
Once the theory has been covered, the practical component (aka the fun part) begins:
Simulator training
Line of Sight (LOS) flying, including throttle management, hover control and roll/pitch/yaw
Box Circuits
First Person View (FPV) flying
Drone Racing obstacle course
Once the course is completed each participant will walk away with a certificate of completion which will allow you to attend the DRA ‘Free Flying’ sessions at their headquarters in Constantia as well as participate in DRA League events.
This course is designed for participants between the ages of six and eighteen years of age and will be grouped accordingly. If this is something you love; join and compete in the league and the top pilot in South Africa will compete in the Drone Racing World Championship, this might be a start to a whole to passion and definitely is a major start for South Africa in this futuristic sport. So help and support with the growth of this new journey in sports, become a skilled drone pilot, master it and let’s show the world what Mzanzi is made of; the first step is being the on the Saturday, 24 June 2017. Let’s begin.
