Colours of Change Art Exhibition at !Khwa ttu San Culture and Education Centre

Head up the West Coast for a fascinating exhibit featuring work by San artists from Botswana

Get a glimpse into the lives of San hunter-gatherers through contemporary artworks on display at the Colours of Change exhibition at !Khwa ttu (KT) San Culture and Education Centre until Saturday, 31 May 2014.

Produced by San artists and craft producers at the Kuru Art Project in Botswana, the exhibition is dedicated to celebrating San culture – past, present and future. Its key goals include restoring and sharing San heritage. Visual art has always been an expressive outlet used by Southern Africa’s indigenous peoples to share their traditions and life experiences dating all the way back to the simple yet evocative rock paintings.

“I do not see myself as just another artist,” says Coex’ae Dad, one of the exhibiting creators. “Being an artist is part of my existence as much as being Ncoa Khoe [San] is part of my existence.”

!Khwa ttu aims to share the spirit of these artists and enable them to transcend cultural limitations and reach a wide audience through this exhibition. The culture and education centre, which is near Yzerfontein on the R27 West Coast Road, also seeks to empower the hunter-gatherers to reclaim their stories and tell them their own way. The Kuru Art Project consists of artists and craft producers that are residents of D’Kar Botswana and the collective has produced work found in private and public collections around the world, several book covers and even on the tails of British Airways airplanes.
