Bonnievale Bonanza

Gear up for the Breede River Valley’s family-friendly weekend of fun runs, bike races and festivities!

Whether you’re looking for something fun to do with kids or simply want to get out of the city, we’ve got just the thing for you! Escape the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle and head out to the Breede River Valley for the Bonnievale Bonanza’s annual weekend-long fiesta of fun. This sport-based, family-friendly extravaganza is set to take over the quaint town from Thursday, 30 October to Sunday, 2 November 2014.

Going from strength to strength each year, the festival, which celebrates its 20th birthday in 2014, has expanded to a four-day event and is set to kick off with an intimate celebrity chef four-course dinner.

Otherwise, as was the case in previous years, the hamlet invites cyclists, walkers, runners, joy-riders and guests alike to enjoy adrenaline-pumping activities and so much more while drinking in the majestic surrounding Langeberg Mountains from the banks of the Breede River.

Festival headquarters is situated at the Bonnievale High School, but some individual events will happen at other designated locations.

Billed as the ‘Cinderella of the Breede’ for its best kept-secret allure, Bonnievale lies just off Route 62, approximately 180km outside Cape Town. Known for its warm and unpretentious hospitality, this lush valley town is the perfect place to spend a leisurely few days outside of the hustle and bustle of the city.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2014 BONNIEVALE BONANZA FUN RUN & FAMILY FESTIVAL

A CELEBRITY CHEF DINNER: To get the weekend-long party started, festival-goers can sit down and rub shoulders with the 2013 winners of DsTV’s KykNET Kokkedoor cooking contest, Tiaan Langenegger and Mynhardt Joubert. These two talented chefs will prepare an intimate four-course dinner which will be served on the terrace and later in the cellar of Weltevrede Family Wine Estate. Paired with vinos from this Bonnievale-based wine farm, the evening meal comprises classic dishes with a special twist. What’s more, Tiaan and Mynhardt will interact with guests on the terrace and chat about the dishes and their respective pairings.
COST: Spots are very limited. Tickets cost R290p/p and can be booked by contacting Helena de Wet on +27 (0) 83 603 2971 or helena@sa3.co.za. Dinner starts at 6:30pm.

SPAR POTJIEKOS CONTEST: One of the many highlights of the festival, the Spar Potjiekos competition takes place on the Friday evening (31 October 2014) and sees potjie enthusiasts battle it out to determine the ultimate potjiekos master chef! Prizes will be awarded for the Best Potjie, the Best Looking Stall and the Best Team Spirit, and there will be loads of lucky draw prizes up for grabs. The competition starts at 6pm.
COST: Entries cost R50 per team of four to enter and forms are available at the Bonnievale Spar or by emailing carolr@mweb.co.za. Do note that the competition is only open to FUN people.

A 4x4 ADVENTURE: Bundu-bashers can also enjoy a fantastic day out on the Citrus Poort 4x4 route just outside of Bonnievale on Saturday, 1 November 2014. The farm’s Leopard Trail has a 2-3 grade and boasts magnificent scenic views of the Route 62 landscape and a very diverse eco-system of fauna and flora. The group will meet at Mooivallei Cheese at 7am and after enjoying rusks, coffee and, of course, some of their lovely cheeses, will depart at 8am; the aim is to return to civilisation around lunchtime. Please note that 4x4s are not supplied; bring your own.
COST: Entry costs R250 per vehicle. To book or for information contact, Robert Raubenheimer on  +27 (0) 82 923 9074 or at robert@fmcgts.co.za.

ACTIVITIES AND THINGS TO DO: Delicious homemade goods and wares will be on offer at craft stalls in the main festival area, and foodies can stock up on the finest in organic fresh produce, wine, cheese, baked goods and much, much more at the Sunday Bonnievale Food Market at the Bonnievale Wine Cellar. Plus, sushi enthusiasts can also learn how to make sushi at a workshop lead by the pros from the Jozi-based restaurant Blackanese. There will also be activities for kids, like jumping castles and a session where little ones can learn more about slithering, cold-blooded creatures at the Mini Mo Snake & Reptile Expo.

LOADS OF ENTERTAINMENT: Aside from all the competitions and sporting events, visitors to this lush region can check out the much-loved veteran car show, where lovers of classic and vintage cars will showcase their pride and joys at the festival grounds before heading out for a parade in the town’s main road at 11am. What’s more, Saturday’s line-up of events includes the Ms Bonanza pageant, star-gazing and so much more. Not to mention, Afrikaans music lovers are in for a treat when top local acts take to the stage over the course of the weekend for an opskop of note.
