Baraka Gift and Decor Shop Special

Save 10% on quirky collectibles and unusual gifts every Sunday at this De Waterkant treasure trove

Baraka, which can be found in the cobbled suburb of De Waterkant, is already the sort of store you never want to leave. And now, on Sundays, the eclectic gift and decor shop is making it even more impossible to walk away by offering a 10% discount on every single one of its already rather affordable products exclusively to our readers (just be sure to mention CapeTownMagazine.com when making your purchase).

And the best part is, almost everyone, from long-term locals to visiting tourists, is guaranteed to find something they’ll fall in love with. The colourful boutique, which sits proudly at the Dixon Street entrance to the Cape Quarter Piazza lifestyle centre, is jam-packed from floor to ceiling with pretty bits and bobs, and because owners Gavin Terblanche and Belteshazzar Raubenheimer only source items they’d want in their own home, there’s nothing tacky or generic here – only little gems that make for adored gifts.

Many of the trinkets, artworks and homeware pieces are handmade, -woven and -stitched by local craftsmen and –women or small, independent businesses, so they’re typically one-of-a-kind or at least part of a limited edition series. What’s more, the shop’s contents change weekly, if not daily, as the founders find new and exciting items to add; as a result, you’re guaranteed to find something unique and undiscovered every time you visit.

Although you never know what you might stumble upon at Baraka, the shop does reliably stock a rainbow of bright scarves, an assortment of ceramics, genuine Panama hats, original artworks by South African creatives, vintage decor gems and offbeat posters and greeting cards. On any given day, browsers might also unearth scatter cushions with Tretchikoff prints, ostrich leather handbags, Buddha carvings, cutlery made from recycled driftwood and shells, woven Zulu baskets, drink coasters printed with Afrikaans song lyrics, penis-shaped salt and pepper shakers, retro comic books and much, much more.

The atmosphere at the tiny 37-m sq. store is also rather alluring. The owners always play upbeat music and their playful personalities and passion for their products shine through. So, even if it weren’t for the 10%-off special, Baraka would still be a recommended stopover on lazy Sundays – the discount simply makes shopping at this Cape Town treasure trove that much sweeter.

  • The deal is only valid on Sundays during opening hours (11am to 3pm).
