Sunday brunch in Cape Town is a serious affair; but Café Extrablatt, a late 2011 German-owned addition to the Green Point strip, has neatly sidestepped the standard barbs (i.e. who claims the perfect poached egg) that locals hoist back and forth simply by offering one of the most affordable all-you-can-eat buffets in the city.
The breakfast-cum-lunch spread at the eatery is a remarkable R99.95, a figure few can scoff at when guaranteed an unlimited number of return trips to the egg man (he makes omelettes, scramblies and fry-ups any way you want them) and what lies beyond.
With a selection of English and South African mainstays – including cereals, fresh fruit, cold meats and cheeses, bacon, pork sausages, mushrooms, baked beans and grilled tomato – rounded out by freshly-baked breads and pastries, the buffet provides more than enough opportunity for firsts, seconds, and, dare we say it, fifths.
Not to mention, as a special addition to the reasonably priced brunch, a warm lunch dish and smoked salmon are on offer on Sundays only. Thus those peckish for a serious meal on a solemn day (Capetonians take their day of rest to heart, after all) need not be disappointed.
Green Point’s Café Extrablatt is the South African restaurant debut of the well-known and much-loved German chain; there are 56 (and counting) Extrablatts in Germany. Renowned for its ‘round-the-clock appeal, the eatery is just as ideal for a quick caffeine fix as it is for a late-night meal (the kitchen is open until midnight daily).
Its airy, spacious brasserie-style downstairs is the perfect environment to get lost in an early morning Sunday newspaper, and its lounge-style upstairs (one of the largest smoking sections in Cape Town) is ideal for enjoying a pint of Pilsner Urquell – yes, they have the European beer on tap – a little later in the afternoon.
What’s more, true to its German origin, those in the mood for currywurst, roulade or veal schnitzel can take solace in the fact that a few of the original Deutschland delicacies on the menu have been maintained.
Price: Sunday brunch at Café Extrablatt runs from 9am to 2pm, and is R99.95 for adults and R49.95 for children under 10 years of age.
