Turn yourself over to an evening of sweet nostalgia at ‘Ninetiesmania’, Mike McCullagh’s upbeat, fast-paced musical showing at the intimate Roxy Revue Bar at GrandWest from Friday, 31 August 2012 until Saturday, 3 November 2012. Show times run every Wednesday to Saturday starting at 8pm.
Remember the days when we looked something up in an encyclopaedia and we didn’t Google it? When Google was a weird sound, not a verb? When we listened to cassettes not CDs, and watched videos 'cos a ‘DVD’ was C3PO’s mate from Star Wars? Remember Star Wars?! If you don’t know what we’re talking about, you’re probably too young to be on the Internet unsupervised.
We’re talking about the 90s, man. Back when Michael Jackson was the ‘King of Pop’ not parody, and no one minded when Madonna wore a leotard...okay, maybe that was the 80s, but you get the point. It was a simpler time, and for many, a time that left great memories - fashion and hair styles aside. It was also a time that showed noticeable technological development, and it was a period when interesting happenings were coming to rest in the realms of politics and sport: with the release of Nelson Mandela from prison and South Africa winning its first Rugby World Cup.
If all of this is prompting a trip down memory lane, ‘Ninetiesmania’, is just the ticket. Theatre-goers can look forward to meeting Manny Herman, car mechanic by day and singer by night; but more importantly, a character who light-heartedly introduces the audience to many of the innovations, events, fashions and sounds of the period via screen projected images. Expect musical hits from the 90s, but don’t get too comfortable, as it’s a fun, interactive show that encourages audiences to show off their own forgotten dance moves (for those old enough to remember the ‘Macarena’).
