Katrin Coetzer’s solo art exhibition at Salon91

A visually arresting account of this Cape Town-born illustrator’s travels

Designer and illustrator Katrin Coetzer’s solo art exhibition, “Honeymoon” opens at the Salon91 art gallery in Cape Town on Wednesday, 24 April and runs until Saturday, 18 May 2013.

The Cape Town-born artist’s studies and work took her across the globe and provides much the inspiration for this intriguing presentation. This whimsical exhibition documents places – current, historical, remembered, imagined and hoped for – and represents a particular period in the artist’s life that was marked by a waning sweetness.

The body of work is centered on themes of spatial exploration; from the real and tangible to the imaginary and remembered, each artwork is a reflection of the artist’s impression.

The collection features an array of media and styles, which led one of Coetzer’s friends to describe the exhibition as, “A group show made by one person.”

Coetzer squared away a BA in Visual Communication in 2007 and a BPhil in Visual Art majoring in illustration in 2012 through the Stellenbosch University, all while maintaining a freelance career. In 2011, she was the recipient of a grant that sent her to the University of Helsinki in Finland to participate in Design and the City, a summer course exploring the relationship between art, design, urbanism and spatial identity. Not to mention, she was selected along with another South African artist to exhibit at the Illustrators Exhibition at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy.

The Salon91 gallery is open from Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 6pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 2pm. The gallery will only be open for viewings on Mondays and public holidays by appointment.
