This winter, blues legend Dan Patlansky kicks off a mini-tour of the Western Cape on Saturday, 14 July at the Bordinghuis Teater, Wellington. From there, the sexy soloist moves on to play live performances in Hermanus, Houtbay, Durbanville, Stellenbosch, Cape Town city centre and, finally, in Noordhoek on Sunday, 22 July.
Bear with us a moment as we wade through the fog of cigarette smoke, the haze of bourbon, and the overall melancholy of blues acts gone by to tell the tale of Dan Patlansky - a South African boy who’s become somewhat of an international blues legend (in our opinion). And when it comes to blues, we don’t use the term ‘legend’ lightly.
His music is best described as, “vacillating between slick, soulful blues and the renegade psychedelic angst and raw emotion of Hendrix or Zeppelin – Fire encased in ice... if you will”. Did we mention he’s only 30? It’s been said, “What Dan Patlansky can do with a six-string Fender Stratocaster at the age of 30, most critically acclaimed guitarists will never quite achieve in a lifetime”.
Patlansky released his debut album, Standing at the Station as an independent album that not only floored critics, but also earned him the reputation as a ‘blues phenomenon’. This success ensured his second album; True Blues was produced and released by EMI on the famed “Blue Note label” in 2004. He went on to release third and fourth albums, Real and Move My Soul, as critics and fans alike fell more and more in love with his gravelly voice and guitar-picking talent. He has very recently released his fifth and latest album, 20 Stones, which is on sale at music outlets throughout the country. This release, unlike his former albums, includes vocals which are described as having a “gut-wrenching quality that compliments the renegade approach to the blues”. We have no doubt it lives up to reputation.
Patlansky has spent time overseas - most notably living in the city famous for blues and voodoo alike, New Orleans - performing alongside famous international acts,. Legend has it that his touring was cut short with the onslaught of Hurricane Katrina, during which he lost his most prized possession,– the 50-year-old Fender Stratocaster, know as “The Red”, on which Patlansky composed and played his music. However, one year later at an airport in South Africa, Dan met the American band that played with him in New Orleans, andthey were carrying “The Red”. Talk about a stroke of magic.
“Cape Town is always incredible – I can’t wait to get on the road with the band and spend some time with fans in the Mother City,” - Patlansky.
