Candice Breitz’s Extra exhibition at Iziko

One artist looks at what it means to be white in contemporary South Africa

After a very successful exhibition at the Standard Bank Gallery in Johannesburg, Candice Breitz brings Extra! (2011), her video installation and photography exhibition, to Cape Town. The collection of work is showing at the Iziko South African National Gallery from Thursday, 26 April until Sunday, 22 July 2012.

This Berlin-based South African artist has established a significant international reputation and has exhibited worldwide. This current exhibition sees the artist insert herself into a series of images from SA’s much-loved soap opera, Generations, which has been broadcast on SABC1 since 1994.  The result is an amusing group of photos that looks to highlight the context of what it means to be white in contemporary South Africa.

This poignant exhibition is accompanied by previous exhibitions, Ghost Series (1994), a series of photographs of tourist postcards altered with “Tippex”, as well as Factum (2010), a series of dual-channel installations questioning identity and self-formation.

So, whether you’re an ardent art lover, or you’re just looking to see life in South Africa through another’s eyes, this installation will not only spark debate, but enlighten.
